How to calculate food and drink calories
- Enter a food and an optional amount, such as “2 eggs”, “banana 120 g” or “200 ml milk”. Select the matching food and preparation from the results.
- Check the amount and unit. Search fills in a recognised quantity when a matching measure exists for that food. Piece and volume weights are source averages. You can always use grams.
- See your portion’s calories and nutrients. The table compares your portion with the values per 100 grams.
The calculator is free and needs no account. Search ingredients, drinks and prepared dishes. For a prepared dish, choose the entry closest to your recipe.
Which nutrition values can you see?
See energy in kilocalories (kcal) and kilojoules (kJ), plus protein, carbohydrate, sugars, fat, fibre and salt in grams. Fat is broken down into saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat.
The Your portion column updates when you change the amount. The 100 g column stays constant, helping you compare different foods and portion sizes. Sugars are included in carbohydrate, and the different types of fat are part of total fat; do not add them again.
How are nutrition values calculated?
Portion nutrition = value per 100 grams × portion weight in grams ÷ 100. The same calculation applies to calories, protein, carbohydrate, fat and the other displayed nutrients.
Worked example: a food label says 160 kcal / 100 g and the portion weighs 250 g.
160 × 250 ÷ 100 = 400 kcalThis illustrates the calculation, not a particular product’s nutrition.
Decilitres and millilitres are converted to grams only when the source provides a volume weight for that food. Available units vary by food. Values are rounded for display only after calculating your portion.
See portion examples for banana calories and egg calories by preparation method.
How accurate is the result?
Results estimate the average composition of the selected database food. Brand, recipe, preparation and portion size affect actual nutrition. Use your product’s label when you need its specific values.
Match peeling and preparation too: a peeled banana entry uses the peeled portion weight. An unpeeled entry uses the weight including peel. Do not combine dry rice nutrition with cooked rice weight.
The calculator does not judge whether a food or meal is suitable for you. A missing nutrient is shown as a dash, not zero.
Food calories or daily calorie needs?
This calculator estimates energy in your selected portion of food or drink. Your daily energy needs are a separate calculation. Estimate daily needs with the maintenance calorie calculator.
To track your intake from day to day, you can manually enter the calculated calories in the Calotank app. Explore the food diary.
Food calorie calculator questions
How can I estimate calories without a food scale?
Choose a count or familiar serving measure when one is available. For example, bananas and eggs can be counted as items. The food-specific calculators below also use bowls, side portions and pots of quark where appropriate. Check the displayed serving size: plates and individual items vary in size.
Without a scale, the result is a portion estimate. For packaged food, you can use the total package weight to work out half a pack, for example. Fineli’s average serving may differ from your own.
Why can’t I find a particular product or food?
Fineli includes basic foods, prepared dishes and some branded products, but not every product in shops. Try a general food name such as yoghurt or oat drink instead of a brand. A general entry gives an average estimate; check the package for your specific product’s nutrition.
Can I include the amount in my search?
Yes. Try “150 g rice”, “2 eggs” or “0.5 l milk”. Still choose the correct food and preparation. Dry and cooked rice weights give different results. If the source has no weight for your requested measure, the calculator asks for grams.
Can I calculate calories from a photo or meal description?
This web calculator recognises one food name and amount. It does not interpret photos or descriptions containing several foods. Optional paid Premium in the Calotank app includes photo and text estimates. How photo calorie estimates work.
How do I calculate calories in a homemade dish?
Searching for salmon soup, for example, returns the average composition of the selected database recipe. For an estimate based on your own recipe, you need the ingredients’ energy values and the weights of the finished dish and your portion. See the homemade meal calculation example.
